toorak house (Swedish church), toorak
Toorak House, which is on the Victoria Heritage Register, was constructed in 1850-51 for merchant James Jackson, most probably to a design by architect James Blackburn. From 1854 until 1876 it served as Government House to the Colony of Victoria. In 1956 it was purchased by the Swedish Church and has functioned as both church and community centre to the Swedish community in Victoria since then.
In 2012 we prepared a condition report and contract documentation for external conservation works to the building which was undertaken in 2013. Following the completion of the conservation works, we were commissioned to undertake a review of the administration and associated service areas in the building. As a result, a minor extension to the existing Multi-purpose room was proposed to allow for the incorporation of improved kitchen storage facilities and new toilet facilities. The administration area, located in the former kitchen wing, was also reconfigured.
