The Practice

Coleman Architecture + Heritage was originally established as Coleman Architects Pty Ltd in 2009 by architect and heritage consultant Ian Coleman. Ian’s 35 years of experience contributes to a practice that combines an awareness of the cultural value imbued in our built heritage, with the architectural skills and creativity to understand and interpret it.

We provide private, public and institutional clients with the flexibility, innovation and client-focus that a small practice can provide. We also provide heritage advice and assistance to other design professionals on projects large and small.

Our projects are collaborative exercises drawing on the expertise and experience that each person brings to the project. Our projects integrate architecture, interiors and landscape to create solutions that provide lasting contributions to their environment and are stimulating places in which to live and work.

Vision

We have a passion for stimulating and sustainable building design and for our built heritage and combine both in our work. We believe that the “sense of place” embedded in our heritage buildings contributes significantly to the richness of our community and that some of the most effective architectural outcomes can be derived from the creative utilisation of heritage buildings in new projects. Unlike many who regard heritage buildings as a liability or an obstacle to development, we see every project involving a heritage building as an opportunity.

We believe strongly in the adaptive re-use of heritage buildings as a primary principle of sustainability in the built environment and take pride in our ability to create solutions that respect the heritage values of buildings whilst significantly improving their environmental performance.
